  47. it will answer some of those nagging questions that always seem to pop up

  51. 1: How do I use BART?
  52.    Now that BART is back on-line again, you can get bart help by mailing
  53.    atari@atari.archive.umich.edu and include the word 'help' in the body of
  54.    the message. This doesn't mean you have to send mail Jon or I.
  55.  
  56. 2: How can I connect via FTP?
  57.    If you are interested in ftp, I recently wrote a beginner's guide.  Please
  58.    mail me and I will send you a copy.  I'll post it every once in a while too.
  59.  
  60. 3: What if my machine doesn't support name service?
  61.    Two things to do here:1) Demand that your sys-admin install it soon,
  62.    and 2) use the internet address 141.211.164.8
  63.  
  64. 4: I can't download because my hard drive doesn't work and my modem goes
  65.    out sometimes and .....HELP!!!
  66.    Sorry, outside of the archive I really can't help you....Your best bet is
  67.    to find someone at your site with a similar set-up, or post to c.s.a.st
  68.    for advice.

  70. 5: HEY!  Your index is much better than it used to be!!!

  77. 6: When I try to FTP to the archive's host, I get a message saying that my
  78.    machine wasn't recognized and I wasn't allowed to log in. What's up?
  79.    We only accept ftp logins from recognized hosts.  If you are not allowed
  80.    to log in, please try again.  It is possible that the DNS took a bit too
  81.    long.  If you are still denied access, ask your sys-admin to fix your
  82.    name servers.

  84. 7: Ok, the index is better, but I can't find a thing in 
  85.    What's up there?
  86.    I'm in the process of reorganizing this directory.  It just got a
  87.    bit too big and out of control to be really useful.  I should be done
  88.    with it by the end of the century.

  92.    That's because you're not using atari.archive.umich.edu like we told you
  93.    to.  In the near future, terminator.cc.umich.edu will change it's name.

  99. archivers/zoo.arc      : The classic archive program
  100. archivers/compress.zoo : Useful for removing .Z from sounds and binaries
  101. archivers/unlzh11.arc  : Unpacks .lzh files
  102. archivers/sttar.arc    : Removes those nasty .tar extenders
  103. THEY ARE CONTAINED IN THE SELF EXTRACTING ARCHIVE starter.tos!!! PLEASE USE IT!

  164. Hmmm, the TT I saw yesterday had a new keyboard, with rectangular function
  165. keys.  Are you sure you saw one with the old Mega keyboard?  Personally,
  166. I think the Mega keyboard is nicer, as the new TT one I played with had a
  167. "bubble switch" feel to it, similar to extremely cheap PC keyboards.

  188. My TT came with the new style keyboard. Where were you told they are shipped
  189.  with the old
  190. MEGA keyboard ?
  191. The keyboards are compatible, if that's what you asking, and thus it should be
  192.  able to upgrade
  193. to the new style keyboards.
  194. Anyway, I think the Mega-keyboard is very good, so I don't see the point in
  195.  exchanging it.
  196. (That said, the new keyboards aren't any worse, theyre just 'different', and
  197.  anything new
  198. takes a little time to getting used to...)

  217. allow 3D drawings?  How about Drafix?  I also want to be able to
  218. do 2D detailed mechanical drawings, so something like the Cyber
  219. stuff is out, because as I understand it, it is mostly for
  220. solid modelling and not drafting.  Dynacadd would be nice, but
  221. it's a bit pricey.

  252. auf Deutsch ist, weil ich Deutsch ziemlich gut lesen kann (translation:

  275. for the 1040 ST.  Price is not REALLY important if the software
  276. is good quality.  My only limitation is the store here in Ottawa

  297.    I've inherited a Corona Data Systems LP300 (lbp_cx) lasar printer.
  298. Does anybody know if it will connect to a serial or parallel port of
  299. an ST or TT, and if I will need special drivers for it. I'd like to
  300. get it going in Epson emulation mode for starters. It's got a DB-37
  301. connector on it. Is it perchance RS-422?

  443. I would like to buy a TT030 but Iam concerned asto how well Atari Computer
  444. Systems and the T family is doing in the rest of the world; Germany,France
  445. Canada any info on this would be helpful. Ive owned an 4 8bits fo 8 years
  446. now and I know I can expect a good product from Atari but I have come into
  447. the Atari market at the wrong time before (oh yeah, that 5200 was not a
  448. wise move in '84; but them again I could have bought an ADAM}

  516. I have been using WordWriter ST by Timeworks for about 2 years,
  517. and think it is very easy to learn.  It has most of the
  518. functionality you could want from a basic wp, and it did not
  519. cost me much (on sale, $49).

  532. No use of ED floppies! Syquest's removable disk(44MB) is so cheap now
  533. that anything under 20 MB won't sell. 20MB hard disks cannot be sold
  534. higher than $70. They don't even go to the second hand dealer but simply
  535. get destroyed. 1.44 MB floppies will be around for a while till cheap
  536. streamer tape will take their place. Must be crazy to buy ED's unless
  537. a very useful data is only available on that media.

  558. My reasoning is fine, thank you.  Yes, what you describe above is intuitively
  559. obvious after knowing that both drives needed to be set to 0.  What is
  560. less obvious is why the Supra HAD to be set to 0.  My ICD host adaptor
  561. will allow me to set the SCSI device id to whatever I want, and will still
  562. find the drive at boot time.  I can hook multiple drives up to it, etc.  Thus,
  563. I make the following assertion:  there are two logically seperate busses on
  564. the TT (which concern fixed disks):  a pure SCSI and an ASCI.  Each is
  565. independent in the sense of SCSI device id numbers, so each can have a device
  566. 0 without conflict.  My question (based on this assertion) is this:  Why did
  567. the Supra drive _require_ SCSI id 0?  It was the only device on that "bus"?
  568. In other words, do the SCSI id numbers on a bus have to start with 0, then
  569. increment by one?  Could I have a device 0, then a device 4?  If not, why?
  570. This has been successfully done by both Supra and ICD (and Atari, I thought).
  571. If so, then is the restriction only on the first SCSI device (ie does a
  572. device 0 have to exist, but other devices need not be sequentially numbered)?

  574. Another way to look at the question is this:  What need be considered when
  575. hooking up multiple ASCI devices (consisting of host adaptor and SCSI device)
  576. to the TT?  How must the SCSI id numbers be picked for all drives to work?  It
  577. is inexcusable that this information was not included in the TT manual.  For
  578. example, my hard disk was set to SCSI id 1 when I bought it.  Thus, were I
  579. to get a TT (and without the benifit of helping my friend) I would not be
  580. able to get the damn thing to work without a phone call to Atari.  Since this
  581. computer is a logical upgrade from the ST architecture, all information needed
  582. to "upgrade" should be included in the manual!!!!!!

  607. On my Mega ST... I have no SCSI 0 drive.  I use scsi 4 and 5 so I can
  608. daisy chain a friends scsi 0 drive and still access my own disks.
  609. But I can still boot... and use my hard disks w/o any SCSI 0 device
  610. attached.

  612. The fellow you've been chatting with says the TT won't recognize SCSI devices
  613. 1-7 on the ASCI bus, at least not without an SCSI 0 in place.  Device 0 MUST
  614. be used for the first device.  Why????
